2 Key Steps :

A) Function Analysis

• Helps to clearly identify the Engineering System.

• In function analysis we have the Supersystem, System and Subsystem.

• Subsystem – component within Engineering system.

• Supersystem – component outside system boundaries. Not designed as a part of the System.

• System – components interaction between subsystem.

B) Cause and Effect Chain Analysis

• Help to identify the fundamental root cause(s).

• These fundamental root causes are essentially the root causes of Engineering System problem which need to be resolved.

Function can be categorized into two types :

a) Useful

i. Normal

ii. Insufficient

iii. Excessive

b) Harmful

· Trimming is a method of eliminating Components from an Engineering System to reduce or eliminate the disadvantages of those trimmed Components · Trimming is used to increase the efficiency and reduce the cost of the Engineering System Example :

Product Analysis : Component Analysis Component is an identifiable Object that make up a part of an Engineering System Interaction Analysis Interaction Analysis is an analytical tool that identifies and understands the interaction between the components of the Engineering System Function Analysis Function Model is an analysis of the interaction between components of the Engineering System and Supersystem. It identifies the advantages and disadvantages of the functions acting on each of the components. Structural Analysis

Cause and Effect Chain Analysis :

· A cause-and-effect analysis generates hypotheses about possible causes(reasons) and effects(results) of problems · A Cause & Effect Chain (CEC) analysis diagram is a structured way of expressing hypothesis about the causes of a problem or about why something is not happening as desired · It helps to focus attention on the process where a problem is occurring and to allow for constructive use of facts to narrow down on the actual causes · It cannot replace empirical testing of these hypotheses, it does not tell which is the root cause, but rather the possibilities Example :
